Scholarship Programs for Military Veterans

Not only does serving in the military help you learn skills and attributes that will serve you for a lifetime, it also creates opportunities to springboard your professional career in your post-service years. Below are some of the national scholarship programs available to help you create the future you desire.

American Legion Auxiliary
Who can get it: Veterans whose undergraduate studies were interrupted and would like to return to school

AMVETS National Scholarship Program
Who can get it: Honorably discharged veterans whose educational expenses exceed the reward they received through the G.I. Bill program (see below)

Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association Educational Foundation
Who can get it: Disabled veterans currently enrolled full-time in at least their second year of post-secondary education

Horatio Alger Military Veterans
Who can get it: Veterans of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom

Military Order of the Purple Heart
Who can get it: Veterans who have been awarded a Purple Heart

Montgomery G.I. Bill
Who can get it: Servicemen and women who previously agreed to have money deducted from their monthly pay for this purpose

National Amputation Foundation
Who can get it: Veterans who have had a major limb amputation and will be attending an accredited school full-time

Paralyzed Veterans of America
Who can get it: Veterans who are also members of the organization

Pat Tillman Foundation
Who can get it: Military veterans

Post 9/11 G.I. Bill
Who can get it: Service-members who enlisted in the 90 days following September 11, 2002 and saw active duty

Sentinels of Freedom
Who can get it: Veterans who sustained injuries resulting in 60% or higher permanent disability

Troops to Teachers
Who can get it: Veterans pursuing a course of study in education and who agree to a term of service in a high need school after graduation

Veterans United Foundation
Who can get it: Military veterans

Veterans Upward Bound
Who can get it: Program participants who are enrolled in or have been accepted into post-secondary education

VVA Mike Nash Scholarship Fund
Who can get it: Vietnam War-era veterans

Wyakin Warrior Foundation
Who can get it: Severely wounded veterans

It’s important to remember that individual schools also often have their own scholarship programs designed to benefit veterans. Contact the financial aid office of schools you are interested in to learn about programs they offer. There are also branch-specific scholarships available. Find more information at va.gov.
